  • After a successful free site survey by one of our installers where it was determined that you can receive a CVB broadband connection, we install a wireless antenna/radio.  The antenna has an attached receiver/transmitter unit and will be installed on your roof or eaves, or where you can receive the best connection signal. The mounted radio/antenna should have a clear line of sight. The wireless signal from your radio/antenna on the roof goes to CVB’s access point and from there to CVB’s backhaul, a point to point wireless link to our Fiber Optic connection in Roseville which is directly connected to the internet.

  • bullet What if I don’t have direct line of sight to the AP

If you do not have a direct line-of-sight to a transmitter or relay tower, one option is to use point-to-point (PTP) networking. PTP networking is where the signal from the Internet antenna is bounced to a second set of antennas.

  • bullet What is the Basic Installation Process?

  • A radio is mounted

  • The Customer Premise Equipment is a small microwave weatherproof antenna/radio mounted on the eaves or rooftop. It can also be mounted on a separate freestanding pole or tower.  The installed antenna points to a an Access Point located on a radio tower or tall building. It can also be your neighbor.

  • If your rooftop has an uninterrupted line of sight to one of CVB’s many base stations, the antenna and radio are connected via Ethernet to your LAN. This connection is like any other Ethernet based high-speed internet access, except this “last mile” is without any wires.

  • High hills and growing trees and foliage could impair your wireless signal, this is why CVB’s installers need a clear line of sight. Fixed-wireless systems operate at frequencies that require a clear line of sight. Central Valley Broadband is currently working with other non-line-of-sight solutions and has successfully installed customers that had no other options.

  • Wiring

  • A CAT5 cable also known as Ethernet cable is run down from the antenna/radio on an exterior wall. Our installers try hiding the cable as much as possible. The installer than drills a small hole in the wall, or will work with existing installation for Cable, Phone, or Satellite TV installations and fish the cable through the hole. If you need additional wiring please contact a wireless contractor. You can use a wireless router to distribute further connections to other areas of you house or computers. (We do not provide you with routers, please buy it at a computer store) You may call CVB for recommendations on which router to buy which depends on how big your house is.  530-852-0318 or 916-676-2697

  • Connect Your computer

  • Once inside the house the cable can be connected to a computer with a network card, a wireless router. (a router is highly recommended for added security). CVB provides you with 1 Ethernet connection. If you want to connect more than 1 computer you need a wireless router, which works as a splitter and you can multiple computers to it. It sends your signal wirelessly through your house to any other computer or laptop.

  • With everything in place - The connection is tested and your calwisp e-mail can be setup if requested. You can use your

  • Custom Installation is anything outside of Basic Installation. Custom Installation is done by quote only.

  • Fishing cable through interior walls and trouble shooting computer problems are also not included. We charge $95/hour for this service.

  • bullet What Equipment do I get?

CVB uses the Motorola Canopy products. For some of the areas that CVB acquired and have WIFI AP’s we still use 2.4GHz  Tranzeo CPQ antennas.
  • The wireless Internet equipment supplied at installation must be returned to us upon termination of your Service Agreement or you will be charged in accordance with the terms of the Service Agreement

bullet Do I get a router with CVB’s service?

No, CVB does not provide you with routers. If you need a router we recommend you ask the store clerk what would be best regarding to house size and budget. Any 802.11b, 802.11g (A "G" router can broadcast a WIFI signal about 50-80 feet in radius from the router. ) or a 802.11n (A “N’ can broadcast a WIFI signal about 80-120 feet in radius from the router) wireless routers should work with our Service. Most laptops have built-in “G” network adapters.

  • bullet How long does the installation take?

    About 2 hours

  • bullet Do I need a phone line?

  • No, the CVB service does not use a phone-line like your dial-up or DSL connection.

  • bullet Where do you mount the antenna (radio)?

  • The CVB installer the radio (antenna)the the eves of your roof or somewhere on the roof where you have a clear line-of-sight to the CVB transmitter. Sometime a pole in the yard or on the fence is sufficient. (The customer has to run the cable to the house)

  • bullet Who owns the equipment?

  • CVB owns the radio (antenna) and the power supply. You as the customer are responsible for the installed Equipment. CVB will advise the customer not to move or tamper with the equipment once the installation is completed. The installed radio radio contains certain components and software which are proprietary. You must agree that you will not try to change anything without direct instructions by CVB.

  • bullet Does bad weather affect my signal?

No. Heat, cold, rain, snow, should not under normal circumstances affect your wireless Internet connection. Environmental factors can affect your wireless Internet like solar flare-ups, electrical surges, electrical storms, but also heavy smoke.

  • bullet What can affect my signal?

    Reflection
    - the signal meets a reflective material like metal furnishings, doors, water and even the atmosphere. The signal then bounces off the object.

Refraction - the signal meets an object with a different density like a wall. The signal bends off its original path while passing through the object.

Absorption - the signal passes through and object like water and the signal is attenuated. Attenuation refers to the signal losing strength and may shorten the reach of the signal.

Scattering - the signal comes into contact with a surface that is rough or many different consistencies. The signal bounces back in different directions each uneven spot reflecting a little bit of the signal in another direction.

Diffraction - the signal comes into contact with a surface that would normally absorb the signal and it bends around the sides to combine back into a signal that is distorted from the original signal.

How to help you help us out

    1. Take your wireless router off the floor and out of the way of items that would block the signal. It should be placed in the center of the area you intend to cover.

    2. You should move your antenna around to find the best place. Standard antennas send signal in all directions from the router but the range is very short.

    3. A repeater may be needed if you have an area that is just a bit too far from the router. A repeater pushes the signal a longer distance, but it does not make its own signal.

    4. Update your firmware - as with any device, you should regularly update your firmware to keep the router in working order. With newer releases the manufacture adds features to the firmware release.

    5. The antenna on the routers can be removed and replaced with different types of antennas depending on what your needs are.
