Update for Our Customers in the Coloma Lotus area

    Hello Neighbors,

For those of you that didn’t make the internet meeting at the Grange on Monday evening,  I just wanted to give a brief update on what both companies, Cal . net and Central Valley Broadband, presented.
Central Valley Broadband (calwisp.com) went first and spoke about the history of wireless technology in the Sacramento area as well as in the Coloma-Lotus Valley.  William, the owner, also mentioned that given the evolution of technology over the last 5 plus years, it is getting harder and harder to offer high broadband speeds (over 1 plus MB) inexpensively.  The smaller WISP’s (wireless internet service providers) do not get the subsidies and government funding like the big guys do.  He coined it as a “good community development” business.  They have upgraded a number of customers off the 900 mhz signal since PG&E is using that frequency for their smart meters.  He mentioned that CVB in the near future will be deploying the licensed wifi signal as well.  They are in the license application process now.  He is committed to this valley and the customers and services that are located here.
Cal. net presented next and John, the new owner as of three plus years ago, confirmed much of what William stated about being challenged by the big telco companies.  He spoke about the new Wimax Velocity service they have installed here in the valley area with their licensed wifi signal.  He informed us that it is working extremely well and most customers that can receive the signal (depending on tree coverage and location) are very happy.   He also re-iterated that he is committed to the valley and the $140,000 investment made in the new technology for this area is a sign of his long term investment.
Both service providers said that they have tried to cover the largest service area possible with their respective technologies, but because of the topography and the trees in this area, there are still customers with below adequate service quality or no service.  They recommended contacting them about your needs or concerns if you have not done so.  There are a number of possible options that may be available depending on your situation.
I am working on getting AT&T on the new Sagebrush tower.  I’m sure most everyone is very happy with the Verizon service that is in town now.  My Verizon phone rings everywhere now (a good and bad thing).  This will take some time so be patient and I’ll keep you posted.  For now, a large percentage of residents and businesses in this valley are getting good to great broadband service now and our great little river valley is moving into the 21st century.

Let me know if you have any questions.

CVB to acquire Sheridan, CA based Far West Wireless Internet

    Latest News for Coloma/Lotus Area

Here is an update on Central Valley Broadband's continuous improvement activities:

As you all recognize since CVB took over from Coastal Web several years ago there has been a continuous improvement in service level and quality in the Coloma/Lotus area. This a the result of the improvement of all the POP sites (access points) in the area including new power systems with large backup battery systems, the addition of access points capacities and redundant high speed backhaul feeds.

The general CVB network has also been improved to support, based on your service level, complete network end to end QOS prioritization for Voice over IP, Video, VPN, Cloud services, Gaming and Movie watching throughout the CVB network. Also CVB added a Gigabit Internet feed to the CVB network a month ago and is in the process of making this greatly increased speed capacity available to our customers.

Recently CVB rolled out new higher capacity access points (in the last several months) and we are in the process of upgrading CVB customers based on service levels to higher speeds. CVB has shown and will continue to show our commitment to the Coloma area by bringing the latest proven reliable cost effective wireless technologies to the area.We really appreciate your continuous support!

FCC: Exaggerated claims of broadband speed persists

This article demonstrates that raw speed is not really what most people need from their Internet connection. They just want it do work for their particular use. If it does they do not pay much attention to the speed. It is really all about the ‘Quality’ of the connection. High Quality connections just work so the users do not have to manage them.

"A year-long study by the Federal Communications Commission has concluded that most ISPs are delivering 90 percent of their advertised upload speed and just 80 percent of promised download speed. Given that typical home users are not particularly interested in uploading, what is disturbing is that only Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Comcast appear to be delivering on the promised downstream experience.

Part of the problem may be related to the delivery of broadband services over ADSL technology, which relies on the use of ordinary copper cables between a home and the local telephone exchange. The maximum speed attainable via ADSL is strictly related to the actual distances involved and the general state of the cables in a particular region.

The overstating of broadband speed is not just a U.S. problem--this FCC study mirrors a biannual report from the United Kingdom's independent telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, which concluded that a substantial number of customers are not receiving advertised speeds.

As reported by BBC News, Ofcom says that "more than a third of customers on services advertised as 'up to' 24Mbps actually received sppeds of 4Mbps or less."

Interestingly, the FCC research also showed how little consumers pay attention to speed levels. For example, 80 percent of those surveyed say they did not know the speed of their broadband service, while another 40 percent identified the level of their service incorrectly.

Which broadband service do you subscribe to? Do you periodically run checks to ensure that you are indeed getting your money's worth?"

Central Valley Broadband Increases Internet feed by 10 times !!!

CVB has increased our Internet Feed by 10 times to a full 1 Gigabit fiber feed - We are currently working on getting this large amount of bandwidth delivered into the field.

Central Valley Broadband implements a Smooth Internet Access Initiative

Although speed is necessary in a broadband Internet connection it is as important to have consistently high quality. Speed tests are typically used to measure Internet connections but they tell only the speed part of the story. Quality is measured by the consistency and latency of the connection. Ping times are often used to measure this latency.

    Ping

Ping times are a measure of how long it takes to get from one place on the Internet to another and back again. Ping times typically range from 10 to 150 milliseconds but can go all the way up to 500 milliseconds, or 1/2 second for some satellite connections.

    Jitter

Jitter is a measure of the variance of these Pings over time. Voice over IP calls start having major problems when the ping times are over 150ms but prefer to have ping times of 100ms or less. This is why VoIP, gaming and VPN’s will not work over most satellite connections.

    15ms Average

CVB currently has local network ping times to our towers that average 15ms, an exceptionally low number for a complex repeated rural wireless backhaul network. This is the result of careful engineering, state of the art equipment and backhaul link optimization. Ping times to your location will vary above this value depending on the type of wireless equipment you have, the quality of the link and the Quality Plan to which you subscribe.

    Quality Plans

CVB Quality plans are tiered pricing levels that provide different peak speed limits and increasing priority access during any congestion of the network. Smooth Internet delivery is much more important than peak speeds for Voice over IP, VPNs, Gaming, Video and for a generally excellent Internet experience.  To view the new CVB Smooth Quality plans go to www.calwisp.com.

    RAPIDLY GROWING BANDWIDTH USAGE

Median User uses over 23 Gigabytes per month

According to a recent survey studying broadband usage the median broadband user generates 23 GB of Internet traffic per month up from 15 GB just six months earlier. Netflix traffic accounts for 30% of peak Internet traffic with real time entertainment feeds accounting for over 50%. CVB Customers Internet traffic is directly in line with these numbers and trends. To keep up with the growing demand for bandwidth CVB has just increased our Internet feed by 10 times and improved our backhauls throughout the CVB network. We are now focusing on increasing the capacity of our local distribution access points so we can deliver all of this bandwidth to you our CVB Customers.

DSL, Fiber and Cable Implement Data Caps

Every day, more Americans cut the TV cable cord, opting instead to watch their favorite shows on Netflix or Hulu on their own schedule, without having to pay for a DVR. It is convenient, much cheaper than one-size-fits-all cable packages, and all you need is a high-speed Internet connection to access them. Internet service providers are increasingly placing monthly limits on each subscriber's data consumption and charging extra when the limit is surpassed. Analysts see this strategy as insurance for the future, in case viewing shifts from traditional services to the Internet. But be aware it adds up quickly on AT&T (150GB Cap), Wave (100GB Cap) and others - you will be limited which means you have a maximum of 2 hours a day of viewing.

Netflix’s Internet Traffic overtakes Web Surfing

Netflix traffic now takes up more of the Internet pipes going into North American homes. A study published by Sandvine Inc. shows that Netflix movies and TV shows account for nearly 30 percent of traffic into homes during peak evening hours, compared with less than 17 percent for Web browsing. Only about a quarter of homes with broadband subscribe to Netflix, but watching movies and TV shows online takes up a lot of bandwidth compared with Web surfing, email and practically every other Internet activity except file sharing and videoconferencing. YouTube traffic was driving the growth of overall Internet traffic. It now accounts for only 11 percent of traffic into the home at peak hours, according to Sandvine.

Our own experience watching movies on our new Samsung Smart TV

The first month after we added the Netflix streaming service our data usage ballooned up to 150GB with relatively modest usage, a few movies, and a few seasons of my favorite TV shows. Our normal heavy user usage was between 30 and 40GB per month, so adding Netflix had a definite impact!

    What is 4G

Perhaps you have heard some of the advertising about 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) from the large mobile phone carriers. LTE will allow customers to use smartphones, laptops, tablet computers and hot spots at faster speeds than the company’s current 3G mobile data network. But as with the 3G network the throughput is expensive, spotty and best used for mobile applications. As an illustration it can cost as much as $20 in bandwidth charges to download a 2GB HD Netflix movie. Also as in the current 3G offerings reliable rural coverage will be limited to areas closer to 4G equipped cell towers.

With one of the plans it is reportedly possible to use your entire $50 5GB 4G data plan in as little as 30 minutes so be careful if you subscribe to this mobile use service. The large mobile carriers are trying to keep heavy users off the new LTE network — especially anyone who may try to use it to replace a fixed home connection. If a user wants to guzzle gigabytes, the large carriers want to make sure that person signs up for an appropriate fixed Internet solution.

    Quality Agent

    Quality Control

Bandwidth is not enough for many new applications such as video streaming, gaming and VPN’s.  Quality is also required.  So in order to improve the quality of the network we have developed the CVB Quality Control Agent.  This software assists in trouble shooting network connection difficulties and will monitor the quality of your connection over time. This feedback of network conditions will greatly assist the CVB engineering staff in their efforts to manage and improve the network.  CVB is looking for customers that are interested in trying out the CVB Quality Control Agent.

    Fraud Alert

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Eldo Telecom article: Fixed terrestrial wireless supplanting DSL as interim premises broadband technology

    Wednesday, December 03, 2008

Fixed terrestrial wireless supplanting DSL as interim premises broadband technology

When it was widely introduced starting nearly a decade ago, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) was viewed by telcos as an ideal interim broadband technology on the road to fiber to the premises and a means to utilize their existing investment in copper cable plant over the last mile. But since telcos are many years behind where they should be in deploying fiber to the premises (FTTP), DSL became more of a permanent thoroughfare rather than temporary byway.

The problem is DSL has not been able to adequately fulfill that role due to technological limitations that restrict its range and require the use of near pristine copper that's in increasingly short supply as telcos' decades-old cable plants grow old and frazzled.

Now fixed terrestrial wireless is poised to take the place of DSL as the preferred transitional technology on the way to FTTP, starting in areas where DSL cannot due to its notorious handicaps. Over the past few years, a large number of mom and pop Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) offering fixed terrestrial wireless via over unlicensed spectrum have sprung up, exploiting DSL's far more limited geographical reach and providing a faster and less costly connectivity than satellite Internet. The big telcos have also incidentally picked up some fixed premises customers with their mobile wireless 3G broadband offerings, but don't represent a threat to the WISPs due to high latencies and bandwidth useage caps.

The proliferation of WISPs as a substitute for DSL is evident in this blogger's area of El Dorado County, California where one, Central Valley Broadband, is offering 3Mbs service to telco neglected SOHOs (Single Occupant Home Offices) located in telco broadband black holes.

Telcos and to some extent cable providers have effectively ceded these areas to the WISPs, leading to increased competition among them. More competition among WISPs is also driving consolidation. Central Valley Broadband announced in October it had acquired two WISPs serving Placer and El Dorado counties.

Looking head, I expect WISPs to continue to provide a more flexible and robust pre-FTTP premises broadband option than DSL. Since it will likely be many years before most all premises have fiber optic connections, the WISPs appear set for a good long run.
